Enamel, what is it?
Enamel is a hard, thin, glassy, material. The term is used both for transparent, white or coloured glass enamel, which is used as decoration and protective surface coating on metal objects, and for tooth enamel, the hard white coating on human and animal teeth.
Enamel is a hard, smooth and thin glass mass (glass flux) or glaze, with or without colour, used to decorate, reinforce or protect the surface of objects made of metal, glass and porcelain. Enameling, that is, the technique of decorating or coating things with enamel, involves several methods of applying a substrate of enamel powder and then melting it firmly. The enamel powder is made from glass dust, melting substances, especially lead oxide, and metal oxides which give different colours, possibly the blue dyes zaffer or narrow.
The word enamel can also be used for metal objects decorated with enamel decoration and coating. A person working in enamel may be called enamel.
Celleemalje (fr. émail cloisonné, cubicle) is an enamel technique in which enamel of different colors is placed in the spaces or cells between thin metal bands soldered as partitions on a metal backing.
Grubeemalje (fr. émail champlevé, 'a removed field') is a technique in which enamel is filled into hollowed-out depressions or pits in the metal.
